Huawei Technologies Uganda Company Limited has officially launched the 2025–2026 Huawei ICT Competition, a nationwide program aimed at nurturing Uganda’s next generation of ICT professionals.
The launch, held at State House Nakasero, was officiated by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet K. Museveni, and attended by senior government officials, Chinese embassy diplomats, Huawei executives, and aspiring young technologists.
Part of Huawei’s global talent development initiative, the competition seeks to bridge the gap between academia and industry through structured training, industry exposure, and competitive challenges. With the theme “Connection, Glory, Future” and the slogan “I.C. The Future”, the program will engage higher learning institutions, training centers, and technology enthusiasts in building a stronger ICT ecosystem in Uganda.

The event also celebrated Uganda’s achievements in the 2024–2025 Huawei ICT Competition global finals and the 2025 Seeds for the Future program. Teams from Gulu University, Muni University, Kabale University, and Cavendish University secured second prizes in the Cloud Track and Innovation categories at the world stage in Shenzhen, China.
A highlight of the ceremony was the recognition of Ms. Michelle Kapsanduy Chemutai, a 2023–2024 participant who became the first female instructor in Africa to earn the Huawei Certified ICT Expert (HCIE) qualification in Internetworks. She credited Huawei’s training and mentorship for helping her master advanced network deployment skills.
Hon. Janet Museveni commended the students for their excellence and resilience, thanking Huawei and the People’s Republic of China for their long-standing partnership in advancing ICT skills. “Our young people have participated in Huawei programs both at home and abroad — and they have excelled,” she said.
Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Zhang Lizhong, congratulated the winners and reaffirmed China’s commitment to deepening ICT cooperation with Uganda through frameworks like FOCAC and the Belt and Road Initiative. “Your dedication to mastering cutting-edge technologies inspires us all,” he noted.
Huawei Eastern Africa Multi-Country Regional CEO, Mr. Dong Xuefeng, emphasized the role of technology in driving innovation and economic growth, praising the ministry’s support and pledging continued investment in Uganda’s ICT talent pipeline.
Testimonies from beneficiaries underscored the program’s impact. Ms. Blessed Nanyonga, a Seeds for the Future alumnus, described the hands-on training in emerging technologies like 5G, AI, and cloud computing as transformative. “We are ready to apply our skills for sustainable development and youth empowerment in Uganda,” she said.
The Huawei ICT Competition offers tracks in networking, cloud computing, and computing systems, with winners advancing from national to regional contests in South Africa and global finals in Shenzhen, China, in May 2026. Participants gain cutting-edge training, globally recognized certifications, industry exposure, and potential career opportunities with Huawei and its partners.
Since its inception, the competition has attracted over 150,000 students globally, reinforcing Huawei’s commitment to building ICT capacity and positioning Uganda’s youth for success in the digital economy
