Victoria University Kampala has launched free Artificial Intelligence (AI) lectures aimed at equipping learners with practical digital skills during the current vacation period, as the use of advanced technologies continues to reshape society.

The programme is open to Senior Four and Senior Six students, as well as individuals holding certificates, diplomas or degrees. Victoria University students, alumni and members of the general public who meet the minimum qualifications are encouraged to apply.

According to the university, the lectures are designed to offer a hands-on introduction to AI, helping participants understand how the technology is transforming education, business, career pathways and the future of work. Learners will gain exposure to real-world AI tools and applications, receive a certificate of participation, and benefit from guidance on preparing for careers in an AI-driven economy. Sessions will be conducted through a hybrid model, combining online and physical classes.

The initiative comes at a time when AI-powered cybercrime is becoming increasingly sophisticated, particularly through AI voice cloning scams. Fraudsters are now using artificial intelligence to mimic the voices of family members or friends, calling victims in distress and demanding urgent money transfers. In some cases, scammers obtain voice samples through silent or dropped calls, which are later used to clone voices with alarming accuracy.

Security experts advise the public to remain vigilant by not speaking first when receiving calls from unknown numbers, verifying distress calls by calling back known contacts, and adopting family code words to confirm identity.

Victoria University said promoting AI literacy is critical not only for career development but also for digital safety, noting that understanding how AI works empowers citizens to harness its benefits while protecting themselves from emerging cyber threats.
